Chancellor John Veres announced on Wednesday, September 2, that Jim Herlihy accepted the position as the new Director of Athletics at Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM). ASC assisted AUM with its search for an athletic director. Herlihy replaces Steve Crotz, who announced his retirement effective July 2015 after serving 14 years of which eight of those years were as athletic director. Herlihy arrives in Montgomery following his time as a NCAA DII athletic director at St. Anselm College and at the University of Montevallo.
Kurt Patberg, who spent nearly ten years as a NCAA Division II commissioner, assisted the University-selected search committee with the recruiting efforts. Patberg also assisted AUM with their NCAA Division II membership application, which was accepted July 2015, into the NCAA Division II membership process. AUM found an athletic director who can help the institution transition to NCAA Division II from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
